In a study of 3,000 companies, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that an equivalent investment boosts productivity by 3.9% when spent on capital improvements but by 8.5% when spent on developing human capital—more than twice the benefit. In non-manufacturing companies, productivity increased by almost 3 times as much.

It's hard to quantify the benefits of training, development, teambuilding, and coaching. It's not so hard to find people and work groups whose lives are better and more productive because they've learned something profoundly useful:

Leadership Workshop Participants:

"This workshop changed me. I got crucial insights to help me get unstuck, to stop tripping over my own feet in areas where I had been blind. The key was the Acumen feedback, and the related flashes of insight I had during the outdoor activities and role plays. This experience crystallized the critical issues for me and illuminated the path I need to take. "
-- Kent Lineback, business writer, former VP/GM, NEBS

"It's too soon to assess the long-term benefits of the workshop, but even if there's nothing else after this, the profound reminder of what I like about myself and the renewed self confidence is worth much more than the cost and time of the workshop. In the midst of all the daily challenges, with their attendant successes and failures, I feel like myself again."
-- Keith Dionne, Sr. Program Director, Millennium Pharmaceuticals

"I'm surprised, frankly, that the workshop was what it turned out to be. I thought it would be hearing some good ideas, meeting some good people, enjoying some time away, and maybe taking away some tools I could use. It was all that, but it was also deeply moving, an intense exploration of myself and what's been holding me back in key areas of my work. I feel renewed, and I know what I need to do to make things different. "
-- Mark Pine, Principal, American Institutes of Research

Culture Change Intervention client:

"Paul, you should take great pride in your efforts to help transform us. The work we have done/are doing is paying off on so many different levels. I appreciate your contributions and effort very much and I'm grateful that you have not been just a teacher or outside consultant, but a real member of the team. There is no substitute for living and breathing this stuff through the really hard part, implementation.
So tip your hat to yourself. And isn't this fun!?!"
-- John Korte, Quality Unit Director, Wyeth BioPharma

Teambuilding client:

"I sensed a real desire to work with each other to improve the whole rather than just individuals' own area of responsibility. I think that this has been evolving, but your work with the group has really accelerated the teamwork. There seems to be more compassion in the way the group interacts. That's extremely beneficial in getting things accomplished in a way that people feel good about."
-- Rick McConnell, Former President, Pioneer Hi-Bred
